Mission

The Humboldt County Community Foundation Board is a charitable public foundation established by community stakeholders for the purpose of improving the quality of life in Humboldt County by initiating programs, coordinating resources, and supporting organizations that enhance education, community betterment, arts and culture, health, and human services.

The Foundation works to provide leadership and resources in partnership with the community toward accomplishing this mission.

Guidelines for Proposals

The Humboldt County Community Foundation Board utilizes a strategic grantmaking plan which includes its Leadership Agenda. Through its grantmaking and community programs, the Foundation is committed to allocating substantial resources to specific strategies and outcomes.

The Community Foundation generally supports three types of requests:

  • Projects of service to the general community and pilot projects
  • Seed money to enable projects to demonstrate their potential or enhance services
  • Emergency funding for community needs

The Community Foundation seeks to meet the challenges of the community as a whole. Special attention is given to requests that increase the capacity of not-for-profit organizations to serve the community and requests that demonstrate community support and in-kind investment.

The Community Foundation does not:

  • Make multi-year commitments
  • Support services commonly regarded as the responsibility of government
  • Provide support for political or partisan purposes or for programs in which religious teachings are an integral part
  • Consider more than one proposal from the same organization within a 12-month period
  • Provide discretionary grant support to an organization's ongoing operating budget, building funds, capital campaigns, or endowments
  • Fund fundraising events and functions
  • Make grants to individuals except for scholarship or special award funds
Fund existing obligations or to replenish resources (deficit funding) for such purposes

Funding Areas

The Community Foundation welcomes proposals from nonprofit organizations and considers grant requests for a wide range of philanthropic purposes. Grants are made where opportunities exist to benefit the Humboldt County community. Typically, grants fall into the following categories:
